A Safer Lake for All

Client

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of General Services

Completion Date

October 7th, 2021

Role

General Contractor

Safety is our main priority at Thomas Construction, and it goes far beyond the safety of our crews. Once a popular fishing spot in Somerset County, the Somerset Lake Dam was deemed a hazard in 2012, due to leaks and seepage at the base of the structure. In late 2019 the lake was finally ready to begin rehabilitation and Thomas Construction was hired as the General Contractor.

The renovation includes spillway reconstruction, embankment enhancements, improvements of the lake drain, and wetland mitigation. We will also increase the dam height and install new drainage systems. Having the right staff and equipment in-house, plus years of experience with dam building and rehabilitation gave us the edge we needed to do this project right. Starting prep work over the winter months is formidable in our local climate, but this advanced planning and labor make construction easier in spring.

Local residents are excited to get their 253 acre lake back, once this project is complete. Proving that a wise infrastructure investment can make endless ripples into its community, the dam improvements are already inspiring nearby upgrades around Somerset, including a five mile trail around the lake.
